Toward Home Alliance welcomes findings of review of South Australia’s homelessness system

The Toward Home Alliance (THA) has welcomed the South Australian Government’s release of the findings of its review of the state’s homelessness system and its commitment to examining how services can be strengthened for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

THA said the Review comes at an important time for the sector, with specialist homelessness services facing sustained pressure from increasing demand, a shortage of affordable housing and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

“Specialist homelessness services have been operating under considerable strain as demand continues to grow, while the sector has experienced net funding reductions over the past five years,” a THA spokesperson said.

“These challenges are not unique to South Australia. Across the country, homelessness services are responding to increasing demand and greater complexity as housing affordability and availability place more Australians at risk of homelessness.

“We welcome the Malinauskas Government taking proactive steps to review the system and consider how South Australia’s homelessness response can be strengthened.”
THA will now carefully consider the Review’s findings and recommendations, including what they may mean for the future structure and delivery of homelessness services, and any upcoming tendering and contracting opportunities.

“As an Alliance, we will work through the recommendations together and consider how we can best contribute to the next phase of South Australia’s homelessness response.
“Throughout any changes to the system, our priority remains the people we support every day.

“Our focus is on continuing to provide the best possible support to the thousands of South Australians experiencing or at risk of homelessness and helping people access the services, support and pathways they need to move towards safe, secure and sustainable housing.”

THA also acknowledges the work of frontline homelessness workers across South Australia, who continue to provide essential support in an increasingly challenging operating environment.
“We are incredibly proud of the people working across our services and the broader homelessness sector. Their experience and expertise will be critical as we consider the Review and work with State Government on what comes next.”

THA remains committed to working constructively with the South Australian Government, Alliance partners, the homelessness sector and broader community to strengthen the system and improve outcomes for South Australians experiencing homelessness.
